Everything can be
If someone tells me in 2018 that Open Source is the best and that everything can be solved with Open Source, I will definitely laugh at it. But today it's different.
The Beginning
I've been a Windows user for almost 20 years. Or maybe more. The point is that I played Prince of Persia in DOS on my father's computer on a black and white screen. Then Windows 3.1 came out, that's when it came out for me.
Windows
Well, that was the miracle after the DOS. GUI, color, and so on. You were the magic. This magic lasted until 2019, when I started my business and had to look for alternative and low-cost solutions.
Dependency
I've tried Linux before, but the thing is, I've always danced back. Windows, if you've used it all your life, is like smoking. You know it's bad, but you can't quit it. However, I had to put down this ‘harmful passion’. All the more so because even though I had a license, I had the feeling that it would not pay off in the long run. Multiple workstations, multiple licenses. I vowed to be brave.
The Dark Side
The gate drug in this case was Ubuntu. Of course, Windows was still up on the other computer, but I was obligated to use Ubuntu. It's been a rough semester. I had to learn how to use the command line, the programs I used before didn't work, Wine was a torture and I couldn't bring my beloved software to life with it.
There is a solution for everything
Of course, over time you will find a solution for everything. Ubuntu has been replaced by Pop Os, which is still my primary operating system. I love it.
Photoshop has been replaced by Gimp and Krita. Illustrator is InkScape, Premiere is KdenLive, ShotCut, OpenShot. VSCode is a cross-platform, but I also tried Atom here, which unfortunately has since been closed. So I found a solution for everything.
Another addiction
This is where the Open Source mania started for me. It's a long slow and bitter new addiction. But it's fantastic. It may sound strange, but the difficulty of finding, learning and using Linux and Open Source tools makes life so much easier.
Imagine you're creating your own Cloud like Google Drive, only here the data is on your own servers, a smart home hub where you control everything. Your own media server that you can access from anywhere and operate for free. You create your own AI at home that only helps you.
There are many opportunities in this world. I love to explore and use these tools and I encourage everyone to do so all the time. In the future, I will try to present a project in detail. Because it's Open Source above all else.
